MESSAGE
MASS AT CHONJINAM
JUNE 24, 2016 – 11 A.M.

I wish to unite myself with the Bishop of Suwon Most Rev. Matthias RI Iong-hoon, the Ausiliary Bishops the Priests, Religious and Lay people – as we celebrate the feast of St. John the Baptist.

Today we commemorate in our spiritual intentions the Servants of God, John Baptist Yi Byeok, and companions, whose remains are buried here at Chon Jin Am. We pray that their cause of martyrdom will soon be approved and that they will be, in the near future, elevated to the Altars as “BLESSEDS”, martyrs for the faith. The “servants of God” at Chonginam were the first Christians in Korea who gave their lives for Christ – the blood of these first martyrs is the foundation stone of the life of the Church in Korea.
The Visit of the Holy Father to Korea (August 14-18) brought out three spiritual realities of the life of the Church in Korea – its past, present and future: MEMORY, HOPE, WITNESS.

- MEMORY: we cannot forget the peculiar origins of the Church in Korea, by the grace of the Holy Spirt – it is a Church that was started by lay persons. The first Christians and martyrs are here at Chonginam. This memory is now blessed with our 103 saints, 124 blessed, all holy martyrs, and at present there is the advanced process in Rome, John Baptist Yi Byeok and 4 other companion whom we venerate and commemorate at today’s Holy Mass.

- HOPE – We do not commemorate only the past, but also the present and the future. The martyrs of the Church are shining examples to all the baptized of total commitment to Christ. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, after his visit, asks all Korean catholics to commit themselves totally to Christ, in their lives and in their mission to others.

- WITNESS – in the midst of secularization of society and relativism in serach for personal material comforts, the life of the holy martyrs and servants of God bears witness to the grace of the Spirit, as the continued fertility of the grounds of evangelization and personal sanctification.

Pope Francis asks us to be guardians of memory of hope” to be truewitnesses of the Gospel: “The Church is the guardian of memory and hope: she is a spiritual family in which the adults pass on to the young the torch of faith received from their forebears. The memory of past witnesses becomes a new witness in the present and hope for the future” (Pope Francis, August 20, 2014)

It is the prayer of Pope Francis that: The tree that was planted and nurtured by the blood of the martyrs will spread its branches – in Korea and in other countries of Asia- like arms of love for Christ in Korea. We pray that MEMORY, HOPE, AND WITNESS will continue to urge us on to the joy of gospel. AMEN.
