당시 언론과 보도기관에서는 100만여명이라고 하였으나, 필자는 55만명~60여만명으로, 내한한 성청 인사들에게 보고 하였었다(Sua Santità Giovanni Paolo II aveva concelebrato la messa per la canonizzazione dei 103 Beati martiri coreani, con molti Cardinali, Arcivescovi, Vescovi, sacerdoti e fedeli cattolici - circa 500.000 - a Seoul il 6 maggio 1984. Per quella canonizazione, il Rev. Byon, rettore di Chon Jin Am, il luogo natale della Chiesa, aveva servito per 5 anni (1980~1984) come segretario esecutivo generale della commissione episcopale per la canonizzazione dei 103 Beati Martiri coreani.

ON THEIR "AD LIMINA" VISIT

Dear Brother Bishops,
It is a great joy for me to welcome you as you make your Visit ad Limina Apostolorum to pray at the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul and to strengthen the bonds of friendship and communion which unite us. I pray that these days will be an occasion of grace and renewal in your service to Christ and his Church.
I thank Archbishop Kim for his warm words of greeting offered on your behalf and that of the entire Church in Korea and Mongolia. Your presence today brings to mind fond memories of my recent visit to Korea, where I experienced first-hand the goodness of the Korean people, who so generously received me and shared with me the joys and sorrows of their lives. My visit to your country will remain a lasting encouragement for me in my ministry to the Universal Church.
In the course of my visit, we had the opportunity to reflect on the life of the Church in Korea and, in particular, on our episcopal ministry in the service of the People of God and of society. I wish to continue that reflection with you today, by highlighting three aspects of my visit: memory, youth and the mission of confirming our brothers and sisters in the faith. I would like also to share these thoughts with the Church in Mongolia. Though a small community in a vast territory, it is like the mustard seed which is the pledge of the fullness of God’s Kingdom (cf. Mt 13:31-32). May these reflections encourage the continuing growth of that seed, and nourish the rich soil of the Mongolian people’s faith.
For me, one of the most beautiful moments of my visit to Korea was the beatification of the martyrs Paul Yun Ji-chung and companions.
In enrolling them among the Blessed, we praised God for the countless graces which he showered upon the Church in Korea during her infancy, and equally gave thanks for the faithful response given to these gifts of God. Even before their faith found full expression in the sacramental life of the Church, these first Korean Christians not only fostered their personal relationship with Jesus, but brought him to others, regardless of class or social standing, and dwelt in a community of faith and charity like the first disciples of the Lord (cf. Acts 4:32).
“They were willing to make great sacrifices and let themselves be stripped of whatever kept them from Christ… Christ alone was their true treasure” (Homily in Seoul, 16 August 2014). Their love of God and neighbor was fulfilled in the ultimate act of freely laying down their lives, thereby watering with their own blood the seedbed of the Church.
That first community has left you and all of the Church a beautiful witness of Christian living: “their integrity in the search for truth, their fidelity to the highest principles of the religion which they chose to embrace, and their testimony of charity and solidarity with all” (idem).
Their example is a school which can form us into ever more faithful Christian witnesses by calling us to encounter, to charity and to sacrifice. The lessons which they taught are particularly applicable in our times when, despite the many advancements being made in technology and communication, individuals are increasingly becoming isolated and communities weakened. How important it is, then, that you work together with the priests, religious men and women, and lay leaders of your dioceses, to ensure that parishes, schools and centers of apostolate are authentic places of encounter: encounter with the Lord who teaches us how to love and who opens our eyes to the dignity of every person, and encounter with one another, especially the poor, the elderly, the forgotten in our midst. When we encounter Jesus and experience his compassion for us, we become ever more convincing witnesses of his saving power; we more readily share our love for him and the gifts with which we have been blessed. We become a living sacrifice, devoted to God and one another in love (cf. Rom 12:1, 9-10).
My thoughts now turn to your young people who greatly desire to carry forward the legacy of your ancestors. They are at the beginning of their lives and full of hope, promise and possibility. It was a joy for me to be with the youth of Korea and from throughout Asia who gathered for Asian Youth Day, and to experience their openness to God and to each other. Just as the witness of the first Christians calls us to care for one another, so our youth challenge us to hear one another. I know that in your dioceses, parishes and institutions you are searching for new ways to involve your youth, so that they may have a voice and may be heard in order to share the richness of our faith and life in the Church. When we speak with young people, they challenge us to share the truth of Jesus Christ clearly and in a way that they can understand. They also test the authenticity of our own faith and fidelity. Though it is Christ we preach and not ourselves, we are called to be an example to the People of God (cf. 1 Pet 5:3) in order to draw people to him. The young very quickly will call us and the Church to task if our lives do not mirror our faith. Their honesty in this regard can be a help to us, just as we seek to assist the faithful to manifest the faith in their daily lives.
As you reflect on the life of your dioceses, as you formulate and revise your pastoral plans, I urge you to keep before you the young whom you serve. See them as partners in “building a holier, more missionary and humble Church, a Church which loves and worships God by seeking to serve the poor, the lonely, the infirm and the marginalized” (Homily at Haemi Castle, 17 August 2014). Be close to them, and show them that you are concerned for them and understand their needs. This closeness will not only strengthen the institutions and communities of the Church, but will also help you to understand the difficulties they and their families are experiencing in their daily lives in society. In this way, the Gospel will penetrate ever more deeply the life of the Catholic community as well as that of society as a whole. Through your service to the young, the Church will become the leaven in the world which the Lord calls us to be (cf. Mt 13:33).
As you prepare to return to your local Churches, as well as encouraging you in your ministry and confirming you in your mission, I ask you, above all, to be servants, just as Christ came to serve, and not to be served (cf. Mt 20:28). Ours is a life of service, freely given, for each soul entrusted to our care, without exception. I have witnessed this in your generous and selfless ministry to your people, which finds particular expression in your proclamation of Jesus Christ, and the gift of self which you renew daily. “Proclaiming Christ means showing that to believe in and to follow him is not only something right and true, but also something beautiful, capable of filling life with new splendor and profound joy, even in the midst of difficulties” (Evangelii Gaudium, 167).
In this spirit of service, may you be solicitous for one another. By your collaboration and fraternal support, you will strengthen the Church in Korea and Mongolia and become ever more effective in proclaiming Christ. May you also be close to your priests: be true fathers, who seek not only to exhort and correct, but even more to accompany them in their difficulties and joys. Draw close as well to the many religious men and women whose consecration daily enriches and supports the life of the Church, for they offer society a visible sign of the new heavens and the new earth (cf. Rev 21:1-2). With these committed laborers in the vineyard of the Lord, together with all the lay faithful, may you build on the legacy of your forebears and offer to the Lord a worthy sacrifice for the deepening of the Church’s communion and mission in Korea and Mongolia.
I would like to express my appreciation in a particular way to the Catholic community in Mongolia for their efforts in building up the Kingdom of God. May they remain fervent in their faith, always trusting that the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit is at work within them as missionary disciples (Evangelii Gaudium, 119).
Dear brother Bishops, with renewed gratitude for the enduring witness of the Christian communities of Korea and Mongolia, I assure you of my continued prayers and spiritual closeness. I commend all of you to the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, and I willingly impart my Apostolic Blessing to you and to all those entrusted to your care.

성 베드로와 성 바오로 사도의 묘소를 참배하고 우리를 일치시키는 우의와 친교의 결속을 강화하고자 사도좌를 방문하신 여러분을 맞이하게 되어 매우 기쁩니다. 이 날들이 그리스도와 교회를 위한 여러분의 봉사에 은총과 쇄신의 기회가 되기를 빕니다.
저는 여러분과 한국과 몽골 교회 전체를 대표하여 따뜻한 인사 말씀을 해 주신 김희중 대주교님께 감사드립니다. 오늘 여러분을 뵙게 되니 지난번에 한국을 방문했을 때의 좋은 기억들이 떠오릅니다. 저는 그때 저를 매우 따뜻하게 맞이하고 자신의 삶의 기쁨과 슬픔을 저와 함께 나눈 한국인들의 선함을 직접 느낄 수 있었습니다. 여러분의 나라를 방문한 일은 보편 교회를 위한 저의 직무에 언제나 힘이 되어줄 것입니다.
한국방문 기간에 우리는 한국의 교회생활, 특히 하느님의 백성과 사회에 봉사하는 우리의 주교직무에 관하여 성찰할 기회를 가졌습니다. 저의 한국 방문의 세 측면을 강조하면서 오늘 그 성찰을 여러분과 함께 이어나가고자 합니다. 그 세측면은 기억과 젊은이, 그리고 우리 형제자매들의 믿음을 굳건하게 해주는 사명입니다. 저는 이 성찰을 몽골 교회와도 나누고 싶습니다. 비록 광활한 지역 안에 있는 작은 공동체이지만 이는 하느님 나라의 완성을 약속하는 작은 겨자씨와 같습니다(마태 13,31-32 참조). 이러한 성찰이 그 씨앗을 계속 키우고 몽골사람들의 신앙의 비옥한 토양에 자양분이 되기를 빕니다.
저의 한국 방문 때의 가장 아름다운 순간들 가운데 하나는 윤지충과 동료 순교자들의 시복이었습니다. 그분들을 복자품에 올리면서 우리는 하느님께서 한국 교회의 태동기에 내려 주신 셀 수 없는 은총에 대하여 하느님을 찬양하며, 그러한 하느님의 은사에 대한 충실한 응답에도 감사하였습니다. 한국의 첫 그리스도인들은 자신의 신앙을 교회의 성사생활로 온전히 나타내기 전부터 이미 예수님과 인격적 관계를 이루어 나아갔을 뿐만 아니라, 계급과 사회적 지위를 막론하고, 예수님을 다른 이들에게 전하며 주님의 첫 제자들처럼 신앙과 사랑의 공동체를 이루며 살았습니다(사도 4,32 참조). “그들은 엄청난 희생을 치를 각오가 되어 있었습니다. 그리고 그리스도에게서 그들을 멀어지게 할 수 있는 그 어떤것도 …… 포기하고자 했습니다. 그들은 오직 그리스도 한 분만이 그들의 진정한 보화임을 알았기 때문입니다”(윤지충 바오로와 동료 순교자 123위 시복 미사 강론, 2014.8.16.). 하느님과 이웃에 대한 그들의 사랑은 자신의 목숨을 기꺼이 바치는 궁극적인 행동으로 완성되어 그들의 피가 교회 못자리의 물이 되었습니다.
그 첫 공동체는 여러분과 교회 전체에 그리스도인 삶의 아름다운 증언을 남겼습니다. 그것은 바로 “진리를 찾는 올곧은 마음, 그들이 신봉하고자 선택한 종교의 고귀한 원칙들에 대한 충실성, 그리고 그들이 증언한 애덕과 모든이를 향한 연대성”(윤지충 바오로와 동료 순교자 123위 시복 미사 강론, 2014.8.16.)입니다. 그들의 모범은 우리를 만남과 자선과 희생으로 초대하여 더욱 충실한 그리스도의 증인으로 만들 수 있는 학교입니다. 그들이 가르쳐 준 교훈은, 기술과 통신에서 이루어진 많은 발전에도 개인들이 더욱 고립되고 공동체가 무기력해지는 우리 시대에 특별히 적용될 수 있습니다. 그러니 여러분 교구의 신부와 수도자와 평신도들과 함께 여러분이 본당과 학교와 사도직 시설들을 참다운 만남의 자리로 만드는 노력이 얼마나 중요합니까? 이는 우리에게 사랑하는 법을 가르치시고 모든 인간의 존엄에 눈을 뜨도록 해 주시는 주님을 만나는 것입니다. 주님께서는 우리가 서로 만나게 해주십니다. 또한 이는 다른 이들과 만남, 특히 가난한 이, 노인, 우리 가운데 잊힌 이들과 만남입니다. 우리가 예수님을 만나고 우리에 대한 그분의 자비를 체험하면 우리는 그분의 구원의 힘을 더욱 더 확신하는 증인이 됩니다. 곧 우리는 예수님에 대한 우리의 사랑과 우리가 받은 은사를 더욱 잘 나누게 됩니다. 우리는 사랑안에서 하느님과 서로에게 바치는 산 제물이 될 것입니다(로마12,1.9-10 참조).
저는 이제 여러분 조상들의 유산을 계속 이어가려는 위대한 열정을 지닌 젊은이들을 생각합니다. 젊은이들은 삶을 시작하는 단계에 있으면서 희망과 기대와 가능성으로 충만합니다. 아시아 청년 대회를 위하여 한국과 아시아 전역에서 모인 젊은이들과 함께하고 그들이 하느님과 서로에게 열려 있음을 경험한 것은 제게 큰 기쁨이었습니다. 초기 그리스도인들의 증언이 우리가 서로를 돌볼 것을 촉구하듯이 바로 우리 젊은이들도 우리가 서로에게 귀를 기울일 것을 요청합니다. 저는 주교님들이 자기 교구와 본당과 단체에 젊은이들을 참여시킬 수 있는 새로운 방법을 찾고 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 이는 교회안의 우리 신앙과 삶의 부요를 나누려고 젊은이들이 목소리를 내고 그들의 의견이 반영되도록 하려는 것입니다. 우리가 젊은이들과 이야기할 때 그들은 예수 그리스도의 진리를 분명하고도 그들이 이해할 수 있는 방식으로 나누어 주기를 요청합니다. 또한 젊은이들은 우리 자신의 신앙과 충성의 진실성을 시험합니다. 우리가 우리자신이 아니라 그리스도를 선포하는 것이지만 우리는 사람들을 그리스도께로 인도하려고 하느님 백성의 모범이 되라는 부르심을 받았습니다(1베드 5,3 참조). 우리의 삶이 우리의 신앙을 반영하지 못하는 경우에 젊은이들은 곧바로 우리와 교회를 비난할 것입니다. 이러한 젊은이들의 솔직함은 신자들이 일상생활에서 자신의 신앙을 나타내도록 돕고자 노력하는 우리에게 도움이 될 수 있습니다.
여러분이 자기 교구의 생활을 돌이켜 보고, 사목 계획을 수립하고 수정할 때에 여러분이 섬기는 젊은이들을 앞세우도록 하십시오. “더 거룩하고 더 선교적이고 겸손한 교회, 또한 가난한 이들, 외로운 이들, 아픈 이들, 소외된 이들을 찾아 섬기는가운데 하느님을 경배하고 사랑하는 하나인 교회를 일으켜 세우는”(제6회 아시아 청년 대회 폐막 미사 강론, 2014.8.17.) 데에 젊은이들을 동반자로 여기시기 바랍니다. 젊은이들에게 가까이 다가가 여러분이 그들에게 관심이 있고 그들의 필요를 이해한다는 것을 보여 주십시오. 이러한 친근함이 교회 단체와 공동체를 강화시켜 줄 뿐 아니라 그들과 그들 가족이 사회의 일상생활에서 겪는 어려움을 여러분이 이해하시는 데에도 도움이 될 것입니다. 이렇게 하면 복음이 가톨릭 공동체와 사회 전체의 삶에 더욱 깊숙이 스며들게 될 것입니다. 젊은이들을 위한 여러분의 봉사를 통하여 교회는 주님께서 우리에게 요청하신 대로 세상의 누룩이 될 것입니다(마태 13,33 참조).

이러한 봉사의 정신으로 여러분이 서로를 돌보시기 바랍니다. 여러분의 협력과 형제적 지원으로 여러분은 한국과 몽골의 교회를 강화하고 그리스도를 더욱 효과적으로 선포하게 될 것입니다. 여러분의 신부들과도 가까이 하시기를 바랍니다. 그들을 훈계하고 바로잡아 줄뿐 아니라 더 나아가서 그들의 어려움과 기쁨에 함께 하는 참다운 아버지가 되어 주시기 바랍니다. 또한 많은 수도자들과도 가까이 하시기 바랍니다. 이들의 봉헌은 나날이 교회생활을 부요하게 해 주고 도움이 됩니다. 이들이 새로운 하늘과 새로운 땅의 가시적인 표징을 사회에 보여주기 때문입니다(묵시 21,1-2참조). 주님의 포도밭에서 실천하는 이러한 헌신적인 노력을 통하여 여러분이 모든 평신도와 함께 여러분 선조의 유산을 바탕으로 삼고 한국과 몽골에서 교회의 친교와 사명을 깊이하기 위한 주님께 맞갖은 제물을 바치시기를 바랍니다.
저는 몽골의 가톨릭 공동체가 하느님 나라 건설에 노력하고 있는 것에 대하여 특별한 감사를 드리고 싶습니다. 그들이 신앙의 열정을 계속 간직하며 성령의 성화하는 힘이 선교하는 제자인 그들의 활동에 함께 한다는 것을 늘 확신하기 바랍니다(「복음의 기쁨」, 119항 참조).

Cari Fratelli Vescovi,
È una grande gioia per me darvi il benvenuto mentre realizzate la vostra visita ad Limina Apostolorum per pregare sulle tombe dei Santi Pietro e Paolo e per rafforzare i vincoli di amicizia e di comunione che ci uniscono. Prego perché questi giorni siano un’occasione di grazia e di rinnovamento nel vostro servizio a Cristo e alla sua Chiesa.
Ringrazio l’Arcivescovo Kim per le calorose parole di saluto che ha pronunciato a nome vostro e di tutta la Chiesa in Corea e in Mongolia. La vostra presenza, oggi, riporta alla mente i lieti ricordi della mia recente visita in Corea, dove ho sperimentato di persona la bontà del popolo coreano, che mi ha accolto con tanta generosità e ha condiviso con me le gioie e le tristezze della sua vita. La visita nel vostro Paese continuerà a essere per me un incoraggiamento duraturo nel mio ministero per la Chiesa Universale.
Nel corso della mia visita abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di riflettere sulla vita della Chiesa in Corea e, in particolare, sul nostro ministero episcopale al servizio del popolo di Dio e della società. Desidero continuare quella riflessione con voi oggi, evidenziando tre aspetti della mia visita: la memoria, i giovani e la missione di confermare i nostri fratelli e le nostre sorelle nella fede. Vorrei anche condividere queste riflessioni con la Chiesa in Mongolia. Pur essendo una piccola comunità in un territorio vasto, essa è come il granello di senape che è la promessa della pienezza del Regno di Dio (cfr. Mt 13, 31-32). Possano queste riflessioni incoraggiare la crescita costante di quel granello e nutrire il ricco suolo della fede del popolo della Mongolia.
Per me, uno dei momenti più belli della visita in Corea è stata la beatificazione dei martiri Paul Yun Ji-chung e compagni.
Annoverandoli tra i beati, abbiamo lodato Dio per le innumerevoli grazie che ha riversato sulla Chiesa in Corea nella sua infanzia, e anche reso grazie per la risposta fedele data a questi doni di Dio. Già prima che la loro fede trovasse piena espressione nella vita sacramentale della Chiesa, questi primi cristiani coreani non solo avevano alimentato la loro relazione personale con Gesù, ma lo avevano anche portato ad altri, a prescindere dalla classe o dalla posizione sociale, e avevano dimorato in una comunità di fede e di carità come i primi discepoli del Signore (cfr. At 4, 32).
«Erano disposti a grandi sacrifici e a lasciarsi spogliare di quanto li potesse allontanare da Cristo [...]: solo Cristo era il loro vero tesoro» (Omelia a Seoul, 16 agosto 2014). Il loro amore di Dio e del prossimo si è compiuto nell’atto finale di dare la propria vita, irrigando con il loro sangue il semenzaio della Chiesa.
Quella prima comunità ha lasciato a voi e a tutta la Chiesa una bella testimonianza di vita cristiana: «la loro rettitudine nella ricerca della verità, la loro fedeltà ai sommi principi della religione che hanno scelto di abbracciare, nonché la loro testimonianza di carità e di solidarietà verso tutti» (Ibidem). Il loro esempio è una scuola che può fare di noi testimoni cristiani sempre più fedeli, chiamandoci all’incontro, alla carità e al sacrificio. Le lezioni che hanno impartito possono essere applicate in modo particolare ai nostri tempi in cui, malgrado i numerosi progressi compiuti nella tecnologia e nella comunicazione, gli individui sono sempre più isolati e le comunità indebolite. Quanto è importante, dunque, che lavoriate insieme con i sacerdoti, i religiosi e le religiose e i leader laici delle vostre diocesi per assicurare che le parrocchie, le scuole e i centri di apostolato siano autentici luoghi d’incontro: incontro con il Signore, che c’insegna come amare e che apre i nostri occhi alla dignità di ogni persona, e incontro gli uni con gli altri, specialmente con i poveri, gli anziani, le persone dimenticate in mezzo a noi. Quando incontriamo Gesù e sperimentiamo la sua compassione per noi, diventiamo testimoni sempre più convincenti del suo potere salvifico; condividiamo più facilmente il nostro amore per lui e i doni con i quali siamo stati benedetti. Diventiamo un sacrificio vivente, dediti a Dio e agli altri nell’amore (cfr. Rm 12, 1, 9-10).
Il mio pensiero va ora ai vostri giovani, che desiderano fortemente portare avanti l’eredità dei vostri antenati. Sono agli inizi della loro vita e pieni di speranza, promessa e possibilità. È stata una gioia per me stare con i giovani della Corea e di tutta l’Asia che si sono riuniti per la Giornata della Gioventù asiatica, e di sperimentare la loro apertura a Dio e agli altri. Proprio come la testimonianza dei primi cristiani ci invita a prenderci cura gli uni degli altri, così i nostri giovani ci sfidano ad ascoltarci gli uni gli altri. So che nelle vostre diocesi, parrocchie e istituzioni state cercando nuovi modi per coinvolgere i giovani, affinché possano avere una voce ed essere ascoltati, al fine di condividere la ricchezza della vostra fede e della vita nella Chiesa. Quando parliamo con i giovani, essi ci sfidano a condividere la verità di Gesù Cristo con chiarezza e in un modo che possano comprendere. Mettono anche alla prova l’autenticità della nostra fede e fedeltà. Sebbene predichiamo Cristo e non noi stessi, siamo chiamati a essere d’esempio al popolo di Dio (cfr. 1 Pt 5, 3) al fine di attirare le persone a lui. I giovani richiameranno subito noi e la Chiesa all’ordine se la nostra vita non rispecchierà la nostra fede. La loro onestà a questo riguardo può esserci di aiuto, proprio mentre cerchiamo di assistere i fedeli nel manifestare la fede nella loro vita quotidiana.
Mentre riflettete sulla vita delle vostre diocesi, mentre formulate e rivedete i vostri piani pastorali, vi esorto a tenere presenti i giovani che servite. Vedeteli come partner nell’«edificare una Chiesa più santa, più missionaria e umile [...] una Chiesa che ama e adora Dio, cercando di servire i poveri, le persone sole, i malati e gli emarginati” (Omelia al Castello di Haemi, 17 agosto 2014). Siate loro vicini e mostrate che vi preoccupate di loro e comprendete i loro bisogni. Questa vicinanza non solo rafforzerà le istituzioni e le comunità della Chiesa, ma vi aiuterà anche a comprendere le difficoltà che loro e le loro famiglie sperimentano nella vita quotidiana nella società. In questo modo, il Vangelo penetrerà sempre più profondamente nella vita sia della comunità cattolica sia della società nel suo insieme. Attraverso il vostro servizio ai giovani, la Chiesa diventerà quel lievito nel mondo che il Signore ci chiama a essere (cfr. Mt 13, 33).
Mentre vi preparate a ritornare alle vostre Chiese locali, oltre che a incoraggiarvi nel vostro ministero e a confermarvi nella vostra missione, vi chiedo, soprattutto, di essere servitori proprio come Cristo è venuto per servire e non per essere servito (cfr. Mt 20, 28). La nostra è una vita di servizio, donata liberamente, per ogni anima affidata alle nostre cure, senza eccezioni. Ho constatato ciò nel vostro servizio generoso e altruistico alla vostra gente, che trova una particolare espressione nel vostro annuncio di Gesù Cristo e nel dono di voi stessi che rinnovate ogni giorno. «Annunciare Cristo significa mostrare che credere in Lui e seguirlo non è solamente una cosa vera e giusta, ma anche bella, capace di colmare la vita di un nuovo splendore e di una gioia profonda, anche in mezzo alle prove» (Evangelii gaudium, n. 167).
In questo spirito di servizio, possiate essere solleciti gli uni verso gli altri. Attraverso la vostra collaborazione e il vostro sostegno fraterno, rafforzerete la Chiesa in Corea e in Mongolia e diventerete sempre più efficaci nel proclamare Cristo. Possiate anche essere vicini ai vostri sacerdoti: siate veri padri, che cercano non solo di esortare e di correggere, ma ancor più di accompagnarli nelle loro difficoltà e nelle loro gioie. Avvicinatevi anche ai tanti religiosi e alle religiose, la cui consacrazione arricchisce e sostiene ogni giorno la vita della Chiesa, poiché essi offrono alla società un segno visibile del nuovo cielo e della nuova terra (cfr. Ap 21, 1-2). Con questi operai impegnati nella vigna del Signore, insieme con tutti i fedeli laici, possiate edificare sull’eredità dei vostri avi e offrire al Signore un degno sacrificio per rendere più profonde la comunione e la missione della Chiesa in Corea e in Mongolia.
Desidero esprimere il mio apprezzamento in modo particolare alla comunità cattolica in Mongolia, per i suoi sforzi nell’edificare il Regno di Dio. Possa essa rimanere fervente nella fede, sempre fiduciosa che la forza santificatrice dello Spirito Santo è all’opera in lei come discepola missionaria (cfr. Evangelii gaudium, n. 119).
Cari fratelli Vescovi, con rinnovata gratitudine per la testimonianza duratura delle comunità cristiane in Corea e in Mongolia, vi assicuro delle mie costanti preghiere e della mia vicinanza spirituale. Affido tutti voi all’intercessione di Maria, Madre della Chiesa e imparto volentieri la mia Benedizione Apostolica a voi e a tutti coloro che sono affidati alle vostre cure.

(Sua Santità Giovanni Paolo II aveva concelebrato la messa per la canonizzazione dei 103 Beati martiri coreani, con molti Cardinali, Arcivescovi, Vescovi, sacerdoti e fedeli cattolici - circa 500.000 - a Seoul il 6 maggio 1984. Per quella canonizazione, il Rev. Byon, rettore di Chon Jin Am, il luogo natale della Chiesa, aveva servito per 5 anni (1980~1984) come segretario esecutivo generale della commissione episcopale per la canonizzazione dei 103 Beati Martiri coreani.(Photos by Baeck - Nam-Shick).

E ≪Gioia≫. Questa parola-cardine del Magistero delPastore Universale riempie ancora di piu i cuori in questi giorni cosi intensi. Il profumo dell'aura pasqualesi fa ancora piu delicato e interiormente penetrante per la lieta ricorrenza del genetliaco del Santo Padre Benedetto XVI. E festa. E la festa della bellezza, della grandezza edella chiarezza della Fede. Di quella Fede che con occhiridenti e dolcemente paterni Egli riaccende nel cuore e nell'intelligenza dei credenti e di quanti a Lui guardano con speranza. E la festa di Pietro. E la festa del Pastore che ti comunica una freschezza interiore che avverti anche fisicamente. E festa.
